Kahurangi Matau. The matau is modelled on the shape of a fish hook - such as the one used by Maui, a figure in Maori mythology, to fish up the North Island (Te Ika a Maui). It is a symbol of strength, good luck and safe travel, especially across water. Kahurangi Pounamu is a translucent, lightish green pounamu with lighter streaks (which look like clouds) and free from dark spots or any flaws. It is one of the rarest varieties of Pounamu.
